You have the right to receive a 'Good Faith Estimate' of the cost of your medical care.

Under the law, health care providers are required to give patients, who don't have insurance or are not using insurance, an estimate of the bill for the medical services to be provided.

  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs such as lab work, drugs and office visit fees.
  • Be sure your provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing, at least three (3) business days prior to your medical service or procedure. You may also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule any service.
  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
  • Be sure to save a copy of your Good Faith Estimate.
  • If you believe you've been incorrectly billed or need more information, you may contact the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) at: 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises for more information about your rights under federal law.
